Short History of Argan Oil

The argan tree is actually an ancient type of tree. Because it is so suited to a dry, desert
climate, it has done well in Morocco. People of the area have been making oil from the
pits of the tree for centuries now. The oil was originally used for cooking, but eventually
its restorative qualities were discovered and it was used to help keep the skin looking
great. Over the years, the modern world has crept into Morocco. Today, the ancient oil
is still made although there are modern methods used.
Rumor has it that in the past farmers followed goats to pick the pits out of their dung.
These were then ground down to make cooking oil and cosmetics. Today, however, the
cultivation of argan oil is much more sterile and controlled, making it a safe way to enjoy
the benefits of the oil. There is a large Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve today because
the argan tree is so important to the local ecosystem – and the people of the area.
